Under-20 are heroes – Lungu

President Edgar Lungu has praised the Zambia Under-20 national soccer team for putting up a gallant fight at the ongoing FIFA Under-20 World Cup in South Korea which saw them become the first Zambian team to reach the quarter final stage in a FIFA tournament at any level.

In a statement issued after Zambia’s 3-2 loss to Italy in a thrilling football contest, President Lungu said although the junior Chipolopolo didn’t make it to the semi finals, they were still heroes because of their extraordinary enduring spirit and unity of purpose they exhibited throughout the tournament, which is a great inspiration to the entire nation.

“You have taught the entire nation a myriad of lessons and particularly the importance of rising above self and embracing unity of purpose in every aspect,” The President said.

“You have made us proud by putting Zambia on the World map and representing Africa very well hence the need for the entire nation to rally behind the team.

“To Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) and the technical bench, Let’s nurture this team into a formidable senior team because they have a bright future ahead of them. I pledge my full support and wish you all the very best in your future assignments.”

And Under-20 left-back Prosper Chiluya expressed regret at not qualifying to the semifinals but thanked Zambian for their support throughout the tournament.

“Sorry to everyone that has been supporting us for letting you down today. We tried our best but unfortuntely it was not enough. It hurts that we’re not progressing to the semi final but sadly this is what happens in football. The U20 WORLD CUP has been a great experience that we are happy to have been part of. The world of football knows who Zambia is once again. We will still hold our heads high as #AfricanChamps.” the defender posted on his Facebook page.
