Nine United Party for National Development (UPND) members are reported to have died in a road traffic accident in Feira, Luangwa district.

Information reaching Zambian Eye is that the accident happened when the Canter truck they were traveling in missed a bridge and plunged into the river. The incident happened Sunday night around 8pm local time. It is however not clear how many people were in the truck and how many have survived.

A source told the Zambian Eye that the accident happened near Kavalamanja area in Luangwa. The truck was believed to have been coming from a campaign trial. The UPND has confirmed the development but could not state the extent of the accident by press time.

The UPND is one of the five parties contesting the Feira seat whose by-election is due on June 20, 2013.
