Traders die in a road accident

10 people have died after a road traffic accident that happened last evening at Mchereka turn-off in Chief Mphamba’s area in Lundazi District.

The accident happened when a truck carrying business persons who were coming from a mobile market commonly known as kabwandile from Njoka village in Chief Kazembe’s area was involved in an accident.

Reports indicate that six died at the accident scene whilst four died from the health facility at Lundazi District Hospital.

From the total of 29 victims admitted at the facility, four will be referred to Chipata Central hospital for treatment as they have severe head injuries.

Lundazi District Commissioner Majory Banda has urged people to have a responsibility to prioritize safety and drive responsibly, not only for themselves, but for the sake of their families, employees, and the community at large.

Meanwhile, Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Limpo Liywalii explained that the accident happened when the driver Jonathan Phiri believed to be above 25, of Chipola Compound in Lundazi District who was carrying more than 40 Passengers failed to negotiate a curve due to excessive speed.

In the process, he lost control of the Motor Vehicle and flipped, causing the motor vehicle body to come out of the Chassis and fell off to the left side of the road with Passengers while the Horse and its Chassis careered off to the Opposite right side where it finally rested.

He says due to the impact, Five Female Passengers and Five Male Passengers who are yet to be identified, sustained fatal body injuries and died while several Passengers including the driver sustained Serious injuries and are currently admitted to Lundazi District Hospital.

All the bodies of the deceased have been deposited to Lundazi District Hospital Mortuary awaiting Postmortem and Identification.

The Motor Vehicle is extensively damaged.
