This Week: Spirit of Patriotism should be embraced by all Citizens

Italian politician, journalist and activist for the unification of Italy Giuseppe Mazzini once said “Love your country.

Your country is the land where your parents sleep, where is spoken that language in which the chosen of your heart, blushing, whispered the first word of love; it is the home that God has given you that by striving to perfect yourselves therein you may prepare to ascend to him”.

Twenty-sixth President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt also once said “Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country. In either event, it is unpatriotic not to tell the truth, whether about the president or anyone else.”

Stephen Nathanson (1993) defined patriotism as involving Special affection for one’s own country, a sense of personal identification with the country, Special concern for the well-being of the country and willingness to sacrifice to promote the country’s good.

Patriotism can also be defined as Love of country; devotion to the welfare of one’s compatriots; the virtues and actions of a patriot; the passion which inspires one to serve one’s country and the desire to compete with other nations; nationalism.

Patriotism is, generally speaking, cultural attachment to one’s homeland or devotion to one’s country. Patriotism binds a nation together, but in a healthy manner because Patriotism is a voluntary, individualistic decision. It is the wholesome, constructive love of one’s land and people.

The Reports about KCM show that many of Zambians are not patriotic to Zambia. It is sad to hear that KCM had been making super profit but the company had been declaring less profit to revenue authority. It also sad to hear that KCM had been mistreating its own workers.

There are also other foreign companies in Zambia that have been cited for poor condition of service but these companies have been reported to be making supernormal profits. These reports are wide spread and it sad that many of these report go unpunished. The end results are that Zambia remains undeveloped and the foreign companies takes all the money.

If the reports about KCM are true then institution such as Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA) should summon it members who are Accountants in KCM. ZICA should also challenge the KCM Auditors. ZICA should also summon the Accountants in KCM to tell the truth on the KCM reports.

The other thing that is surprising is the silence of ZCCM –IH on the case. ZCCM –IH had been silent and it shocking to hear the KCM Chief Executive boasting about the profits while ZCCM – IH keeps quiet.

Another thing that is very sad in Zambia is the fact that there are some Zambian Managers who intend to abusive fellow Zambian at the expense of pleasing foreign bosses. Instead of concentrating on building Zambia they intend to mistreat their colleagues in order to win favor by foreign supervisors. They would even label their fellow nationals as thieves, lazy and dishonest just in trying to win favors or promotions.

Politicians in Zambia have become a source of worry in Zambia’s development. It is sad to see how our politicians intend to abusive public resources. Sometimes I wonder if some of the politicians in Zambians have Zambia at heart or they have taken Zambia as their business venture. Many of the bye elections in Zambia can be avoided if the politicians were able to do the right at all time.

This is why I would like to support Zambians that had been advocating the need to arrest any politician whose seat is nullified due to election malpractices. It is important that the Zambian government and parliamentarians introduce strict measure to curb abuse of national resources. I believe jailing of the parliamentarians that abuses resources and electorate that receives bribes during election campaign would stop the misuse of public resources.

Zambians should realize that Zambia can only be built by Zambians themselves. The spirit of patriotism should be a noble ideology for citizen. Common good or public good requires that individual citizens have the commitment and motivation that they accept their obligation to promote the welfare of the community and to work together with other members for the greater benefit of all. Patriotism often expands to interests worldwide and the desire to see others live as we live, enjoying the same rights.

Zambia should demand that its citizens take an interest in extending the blessings of freedom and prosperity worldwide. A true patriot should be willing to show love toward people, even at times when nobody is watching.

Therefore, there is need for Zambians to show patriotism that is as bold as the strength of might Zambezi River. Realizing the importance of patriotism will enable Zambians see the benefit of being called a Zambian.
