This Week: Nigerians should unite against Boko Haram

Sometimes, I wonder why some people would be so evil against their fellow human being. It is very shocking to read and witness how a person could be so merciless. It is also very aggravating to see innocent people being killed.
This is why it is sad to see how Boko Haram has become merciless. Boko Haram has gone too far. Boko Haram has inflicted pain on many Nigerians. Boko Haram has caused a lot of strife among the Nigerians.
Since the formation of Boko Haram in 2002, Nigerians have gone through pain after pain. The Boko Haram violence has killed more than 10,000 people in the past five years and left hundreds of thousands more homeless.
According to the United High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) BH has forced more than 180,000 Nigerians to flee to neighboring countries while 700,000 people were internally displaced in Nigeria.
In 2009, Boko Haram uprising left over 1,000 dead. According to media reports the violence began when Boko Haram launched an attack on a police station in Bauchi state, with clashes between militants and the Nigeria Police Force.
In 2010, Boko Haram freed over 700 inmates including around 100 sect members from a prison in Bauchi, four people including a soldier, one policeman and two residents were killed in the raid.
In 2011, Boko Haram killed more than 200 military personnel and civilians in separate incidences. Three bombs rip through a beer garden in a military barracks in the northern city of Bauchi, killing 13 and wounding 33.
Recently, Boko Haram kidnapped 300 schools girls and threatened to sell the girls or marry them if the Nigerian government did not answer Boko Haram demands.
The bombing of Muslim worshippers in Kano is another great misery on the people of Nigeria. Lianna Brinded told International Business Times that Boko Haram terrorists sprayed fleeing Muslim worshippers with bullets as they fled the main mosque in Kano, following a multiple suicide bombing attack at Friday prayers, slaughtering up to 200 people.
The Independent also reported more than 100 people were feared died in a terrorist attack on a mosque in the north of Nigeria carried out by Boko Haram. While Voice of America reported that the death toll from a Boko Haram attack at a mosque in northern Nigeria had risen into the dozens, with several hundred other people wounded.
The revelations by the local Authority that Boko Haram was better equipped than the Army was worrisome. It is in this regard that I would like to call on all Nigerians to unite against Boko Haram.
Nigerians should unite and fight against Boko Haram. The fight against Boko Haram should not be left to vigilantes and the Nigerian army alone. It should be the fight for the survival of Nigeria.
It is time for all stakeholders particularly the Federal Government to rise up to the responsibility with view to bringing to an end insurgency in the country. It is the duty and responsibility of all Nigerians and government at large to provide security for the citizenry.
This is the time for all Nigeria to rally round one another and bring to an end insurgency. It is also time for all well wishers both in Nigeria and outside Nigeria to join the fight against Boko Haram.
The Nigeria government and its people should not be ashamed to invite its neighbors and African brothers to assist in the fight against Boko Haram.
Borrowing the words of the Sultan of Sokoto and leader of Muslims in Nigeria, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Sa’ad III, I do not believe those perpetrating violence were Muslims. If they were Muslim they would have been preaching peace.
So, Nigerians should unite and fight Boko Haram before BH kills them. If Boko Haram was left unchallenged Nigeria is likely to return to military rule as it was several years ago. Nigerians should remember that their peace is at stake. Nigerians should also remember that Boko Haram is no longer a war for people in northern part of Nigeria only but it is a war against all Nigerians.
Therefore, I end by saying Nigerians should stand up and fight against the Boko Haram.
