Theft of 23 eggs sparks a protest in Mansa

Students at Mansa College of Education yesterday staged a peaceful demonstration. The students were demanding for the reinstatement for their colleague Reuben Mumba who was suspended on Friday for allegedly stealing 23 eggs from the college production unity section.

ZANIS reports from Mansa that the students were also demanding for the removal of their college Principal Peter Chishimba, among others. The placard carrying students were only stopped by the police who had a tough time in calming them from matching to the Provincial Education Officer’s office.

The students say it is unfair that the college management can suspend the student over 23 eggs when he has been working hard at the poultry house. Mumba was linked to the theft after another student was caught with 23 eggs by the school security on March 12th 2013 as he was trying to move out of the school premises.

They are also demanding that management allows them enough time to go to their respective churches saying they were only allowed an hour to attend to their churches.

The students complained that they are being treated like secondary school pupils as they are not allowed even to visit their relative unless they have pass to do so. But College principal Peter Chishimba says the disciplinary committee at the institution sat and worked within the laid down laws of the college when they suspend the student.

Mr. Chishimba says what the students are trying to protect is a wrong which even the student who is affected admitted to the disciplinary committee and the principal. He wandered why the student behaved in such manner when he was put at the poultry house on humanitarian grounds by the college so that he could raise funds to pay for his school fees.

Meanwhile calm has retained to the college after they students where addressed by Luapula Province Education Officer Jennifer Banda.

Efforts to get comment from the school union proved futile as none of the executive members could be seen at the college.
