Renowned Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa has thanked Zambia for helping fight the white rule in his country.

Speaking when he arrived in Zambia on Monday on a four-day visit, the vocal South African Archbishop said he was happy to be back in Zambia after a long time. He said he was last here before South Africa got Independence.

The Renowned Anglican Archbishop  said he was grateful to the people of Zambia. He thanked first president Kenneth Kaunda for helping to have World Icon Nelson Mandela released from prison.

Archbishop Tutu is in the country to support and encourage efforts to end child marriage.

Archbishop Tutu is visiting Zambia in his capacity as a co-founder of Girls Not Brides, a global partnership of more than 400 Civil Society Organisations across the world.

Archbishop Tutu is joined by Mabel van Oranje who is the Chairperson of Girls Not Brides, The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage.

The duo are in the country to learn about the work underway to address child marriages and to share other country’s experiences on the same trend.

During their visit, Archbishop Tutu and Mabel van Oranje will meet Civil Society Organisations, Government Ministers, Youth Groups, Faith Leaders and Traditional Leaders.

Zambia has been grappling with the fight against Child Marriages with First Lady Christine Kaseba recently describing it as a calamity and called for concerted efforts to end the scourge.
