Texila American University (TAU) launched the Kenneth Kaunda Scholarship 2019 at a colourful event held at its Annex Campus in Lusaka on Wednesday.

The scholarship, which is worth more that K1,300,000, is TAU’s social responsibility initiative in partnership with Zambia’s founding leader aimed at encouraging quality education for all.

Guest of Honour, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, in a speech read on his behalf by his eldest son Panji, reiterated his dream of achieving universal education for all Zambians.

“I am proud of this campaign to bring education to life in the lives of several deserving students. I am impressed with the excellent global standards that Texila American University is offering right here in our nation. It is for this reason that I agreed to support Texila American University in this noble cause by offering scholarships to Zambian students irrespective of their financial status. I hope that in future more deserving students will be exposed to quality education without being deterred by exorbitant fees,” said Dr. Kaunda.

Speaking at the same event, Minister of Higher Education Brian Mushimba applauded Texila American University for the noble cause.

Dr. Mushimba stated that government alone cannot achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of achieving universal education for all without the support of institutions such as TAU.

The minister challenged the recipients of this year’s scholarship to show their gratitude by successfully completing their studies and becoming productive members of scoceity.

Dr. Mushimba further appealed to TAU management to consider expanding the scope of the scholarship so that it is not only merit-based but also takes into account vulnerability.

And TAU Zambia Deputy Vice Chancellor Ajay Kumar Poddar in his speech stated that the institution had come up with the initiative in order to play its part in shaping the future of the nation.

“At Texila we recognise the growing need for quality education that is accessible to all. The recipients of the Kenneth Kaunda Scholarship shall prove to be the future of this nation, continent and the world as a whole. It is for this reason that the TAU Board presided over by Mr. Saju Bhaskar embarked on this exciting journey to play our part in shaping the future of this nation through international faculty, world level academics and state of the art infrastructure along with in-house excellent labs,” said Professor Ajay Kumar Poddar, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Texila American University, Zambia.

Other notable figures who spoke at the event are Ministry of Health permanent secretary Kennedy Malama, who represented the Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya, and Councillor Bupe Mulenga, who stood in for Lusaka Mayor Miles Sampa.

TAU organised the scholarship to award high school A-level and undergraduate students with scholarships ranging from full tuition to part tuition for various programs such as Doctor of Medicine (MBChB), Bachelor’s in Pharmacy, Bachelor’s in Nursing, Health Profession Foundation Program, Bachelor’s in Business Administration, Master’s in Business Administration and Master’s in Public Health. The application forms for the scholarship are available on to be submitted by August 30, 2019.
