Tayali fails to file in nomination papers for Lusaka Mayor

Chilufya Tayali, president of the opposition EEP, has dropped out of the highly congested race for Mayor of the City of Lusaka after he failed to file-in his nomination papers on account of being late.

Tayali arguing with ECZ officials – picture by Salim DawoodThe Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officials said Tayali was late but he insists that at the close of the nomination at 15:00 hours he was at the gate waiting to be called in.

Tayali tried to negotiate with the returning officer Alex Mwansa but the officials maintained that he was late.

They asked why he decided to be at the gate instead of being inside saying they would not allow him.

Tayali who continued talking to the officers saying he would accept their decision only left after the ECZ officials invited the police officer. He left saying he was going to ECZ.

Tayali has charged he had been barred from contesting because he was a threat.

Nine candidates have successfully filed-in their nominations for the July 26 by-election necessitated by the death of Wilson Kalumba.
