Central Province Minister Credo Nanjuwa says Socialist Party has shot one of it’s members during campaigns for the April 20, 2023 Muchinda Ward By-election in Serenje District, Central Province.

Mr. Nanjuwa says SP should realize that being violent is not being popular.

The Minister says the ruling party will give room to Zambia Police Service to thoroughly investigate the matter.

He says the UPND has explained to the people it’s development path after the SP continued misleading citizens.

In a phone interview, Serenje District Commissioner Paul Masuwa says SP President Fred M’membe has since been taken to Serenje Police Station from Serenje’s Ndabala Check Point.

But Socialist Party Central Province Chairperson Jeliaty Ntembwa told Serenje Radio on phone that his party was attacked after UPND realized that it is likely to lose the by-election.

And SP Serenje District Chairperson Best Mambwe explained that his party had a meeting at Kamalamba in Ndabala area which was allocated to Socialist Party according to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) timetable.

Mr. Mambwe says known UPND members from Mkushi District ambushed a Mrs. Jere who was organizing a meeting, undressed her and tore her clothes.

He says the UPND cadres followed SP at the meeting place where they repeatedly hit the SP Candidate Rodwell Kunda with a stick on the stomach there by occasioning actual bodily harm.

Mr. Mambwe says the UPND attackers followed SP President Fred M’membe with a view to hit him, prompting his security team to fire warning shots in the air to disperse them.

He says the UPND cadres followed Mr. M’membe to finish him off at Ndabala Police Post where he was kept for his safety.

Muchinda Ward By-election in Serenje District, Central Province, set for April 20, 2023 attracted candidates such as PF’s Mike Chikubula, Leadership Movement’s Wezi Kaonga, UPND’s Thomas Phiri and SP’s Rodwell Kunda.

The By-election was occasioned by the resignation of PF Councilor, Doris Ikona, who was also the Vice Council Chairperson for Serenje.
