Zambian referee Janny Sikazwe has been named on a five-man Confederation of African Football (CAF) shortlist for the 2015 Referee of the Year award.

Others named on the shortlist are Alioum Neant (Cameroon), Bakary Papa Gassama (Gambia), Eric Arnaud Otogo Gastane (Gabon) and Ghead Zaglol Grisha (Egypt).

Sikazwe officiated a number of high profile matches in 2015 but prominent among them were the Africa Cup final between Ivory Coast and Ghana when he was the Fourth Official and the Caf Confederation Cup first leg, final between Orlando Pirates and Etoile Sportif du Sahel for which he was the centre referee.

He also officiated at the Fifa U17 World Cup in Chile.

“I believe in myself because whatever I do comes from the laws of the game and that is what is required of a good referee. That gives me confidence to be cool and calm in any match I officiate,” Sikazwe told in an exclusive interview.

“My dad was a referee so I grew up wanting to become like him; he was my role model and I  would have loved him to see what I am doing right now. He encouraged me to become a referee and I followed his ideas.

“Refereeing has a lot of challenges since one deals with a lot of people and decisions are final.

“A single decision draws mixed reactions from people; some people will be happy, other people will not be happy.

“But I do not take it as if it is the end of the world. I stick to my guns, knowing that what I am doing is right at the time, I maintain my confidence and that’s it.”

Sikazwe stated that he had hoped to be named as one of the officials for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final but had not expected to be the Fourth Official.

“I was not looking at myself to be the Fourth Official in the final. I had expected to play a bigger role. But that’s what happened and I was not surprised to be picked.”

Sikazwe summed up by stating that abiding to a good training schedule and dedication to excellence were his source of success.
