Policemen had to discharge warning shots at the Lusaka Magistrates Court complex today in bid to disperse Obvious Mwaliteta’s unruly supporters.
Armed police had gone to rearrest the UPND Lusaka province Chairperson who was appearing in the Lusaka Magistrates Court over a case relating to political violence during a by-election in Kafue.
But his symphathisers shielded him from being arrested, forcing the plain-clothed policemen to fire live ammunition in the air to disperse the irate UPND supporters.
Several gunshots were fired in the area as the police alter insults at onlookers.
Cases came to a stand still while several UPND supporters have been reported injured as a result of the fracas.
Meanwhile, succeeded in rearresting Mwaliteta and his co-accused James Sichomba and have since transported them to Kafue.
The former Kafue MP and his co-accused where arrested on March 27 and charged with being in possession of offensive weapons. But their case was discontinued today via a nolle prosequi moments before police moved in to rearrest the duo.
Reports indicate that police intend to slap the duo with an aggravated robbery charge.
