A Freedom fighter in Choma District of the Southern Province has called on the PF Government to recognize and award freedom fighters residing in rural areas.

Dominic Mudenda 76,of Masuku area in Choma District says freedom fighters in rural areas also contributed to the fight against colonialism in Zambia leading to the country’s political independence in 1964, but they were not being remembered for the noble role they played.

Mudenda called on the PF Government to extend the giving of awards to rural based freedom fighters also who fought for the liberation of this Country now called Zambia.

He told SKY FM News in Choma today that most freedom fighters in rural areas who greatly contributed to the liberation of Zambia have not been noticed, adding that many of them have been long dead.

He urged the District Freedom fighter Association to embark on a program to locate and register freedom fighters in the district so that their names can be submitted to Government for the granting of awards during this year’s independence day Golden jubilee celebrations.

Mudenda also appealed to Government to assist some former freedom fighters with fertilizer and farming inputs for use during the coming farming season.

He said most freedom fighters in the district were ailing and too poor to manage buying fertilizer and other farming inputs to enable them fight the hunger and poverty in which they are wallowing with their families.

And in reaction the Opposition Alliance for Better Zambia ABZ National Chairman Dexter Zemba Moono challenged the freedom fighters in the district to get organized and unite for the PF government to easily assist them.

He said freedom fighters deserve respect and honour for the role they played in the liberation of Zambia from colonial rule 50 years ago.

He disclosed that once his party will be ushered into office ABZ will ensure that the lives of freedom fighters is bettered with projects and clubs that will be able to sustain their lives.

Moono disclosed that ABZ will recognise freedom fighters as the pillars where this Country achieved its freedom and independence adding that his party will from time to time consult from them on some maters of national development.
