Opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema claims there is a plot by the Michael Sata government to declare a state of emergency and postponed the 2016 polls, reports Zambian Eye correspondent in Lusaka.

Addressing the press on Thursday morning, March 27, 2014, Hichilema popularly known as HH charged that days ahead will be tough in Zambia. He said he has information that a state of emergency will be declared to show that there is instability.

He cited the demands by the opposition and Civil Society to mount mass protests to pressure government to enact a new constitution would be used to justify calling for a state of emergency.

HH says the PF was also working on increasing their numbers in Parliament so that the law will be passed to extend the tenure of office for President Sata and his Patriotic Front which ends in October 2016.

But government has dismissed Hichilema’s claims saying he was just upto wanting to gain sympathy. Defence Minister Edgar Lungu said HH should just find a good message he sell to Zambians to elect him rather than coming up with unfounded allegations.

The UPND leader has charged that Zambia will be turned into a highly militarized life style society by the time the PF term of office which they intend to extend to 2018 comes to an end. He said his prediction is based on the increased brutality being allegedly exhibited by the Zambia Police and the PF cadres.

HH pointed out the killing of a vendor by a Police officer on Wednesday March 26 in Mazabuka and the invasion of a privately owned farm land in Lusaka West on Sunday by PF cadres as some of the recent indication of increased brutality in the country.
