Sata is fit and working – State House

State House says President Michael Sata is fit and working dismissing calls by opposition Heritage Party leader Brig. Gen. Godfrey Miyanda for setting up a medical board to examine the Head of State.

In a press statement on Friday, August 29, 2014, the President’s Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations George Chellah said It is strange for Brig. Gen Miyanda or any other person to maliciously suggest that the Cabinet should be impeached for not resolving to constitute a medical board to examine President Michael Chilufya Sata’s health when  he (Brig. Gen. Miyanda) knows very well that there is no single clause in the Constitution that provides for impeachment of the Cabinet.

“Article 36 (1) of the Constitution grants the Cabinet full discretion on whether to table the resolution or not and even when it is tabled it is not automatic that it will pass as the Constitution provides that a vote should be taken by the Cabinet,” Chellah stated. “Brig. Gen. Miyanda is also very aware that matters concerning the setting up of a medical board to examine the President’s health are before the courts of law and it is contemptuous and disrespectful of the courts for him to be commenting on matters that are before court.”

“Brig. Gen. Miyanda would do well to concentrate on more progressive matters rather than focus on none-issues, especially when it’s absolutely clear that there is no reason to constitute a medical board because the Head of State is well and has been chairing Cabinet meetings and executing his duties effectively; and therefore there is no crisis in the nation,” he stated.

President Sata has not been seen in public for over two months a situation that has raised public concern and in his last appearance he looked not to be in good health. Government has however denied reports of President Sata not being in good health.
