Police reject UPND youth rally notice

Police in Lusaka have rejected the notification by United Party for National Development (UPND) youths to hold a rally in Mandevu on September 15, 2019.

In a letter dated September 9, 2019, Lusaka Province Police Commissioner Nelson Phiri says the security situation in the city is not conducive and allowing the rally may lead to the breakdown of law and order.

However, UPND Deputy National youth Chairperson Gilbert Liswaniso says he will on Tuesday engage the commissioner to resolve the matter.

“As suggested by yourselves, we would be glad to have an urgent meeting with you so as to fully dialogue over these matters and find an amicable solution to this matter,” Liswaniso wrote back to Phiri.

“As you maybe aware, the UPND is an entity that is in the business of engaging citizens in various forms at all levels, hence we have to find a way to continue our interactions with the citizens unhindered.

“We note your reference to having advised other political parties not to go ahead with their planned public engagements. But as you maybe aware, as a peaceful political party, UPND has no control on the thuggery conduct of some political parties who we have seen invading streets at short notice without police notification.”

And Liswaniso has told Diamond TV that if the commissioner will not allow his party to hold the rally, he will appeal to the Inspector General of Police.
