Police launch inquiry into abandoned newborn case

Police in Lusaka’s Mtendere area have launched an inquiry into the case of a newborn baby found abandoned in the area.

A baby was Dumped by an unknown Mother at Mother Theresa in Mtendere in the early hours of today.

Authorities received a report on June 5, 2025, after a woman identified the blanket used to wrap the infant as belonging to her household.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga says according to preliminary findings, the baby’s mother had given birth the previous day with assistance from a neighbor.

However, by the following morning, the infant was no longer in her possession, raising concerns of deliberate abandonment.

Hamoonga says investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case, with police urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.

“Community members who have provided details so far have been commended for their cooperation,” said Hamoonga.
