Police in Luanshya have cancelled the NDC rally that was scheduled to take place today in Mpatamatu.

According to the NDC media department, the police have also cancelled all the rallies the opposition party was scheduled to hold before election day.

Campaigns are heating up in Roan Constituency – a seat that was previously held by NDC consultant Chishimba Kambwili – and the opposition party believes the move by Luanshya police to cancel their rallies is meant to give the ruling PF a free run in the area.

“Our country has become a police state and is fast sliding into a brutal, despotic and highly intolerant regime. The PF has to be ashamed of the kind of politics that they are bringing to this country. Stopping a party from campaigning for 4 days is unheard of and their fear of losing these elections is making them behave like scared little beings,” said Menyani Zulu the Campaign Manager for the NDC Roan by-election.

“Even though the PF is rendering almost all our democratic institutions powerless and make them work under very bad conditions, we believe that we have to report these matters to have a record of their abuse of office and hopefully that something can actually be done about it.”

The NDC has since written to the ECZ and police to protest about the matter.

Earlier, police arrested NDC Lusaka District Chairperson Andrew Lupindula after he, in the company of other NDC officials, had gone to report an alleged shooting incident at NDC consultant Chishimba Kambwili’s residence.

The opposition party, that is led by former Roan MP and Minister of Information Chishimba Kambwili have also alleged that ballot papers ballot papers meant for the April 11 by-election have been moved to a named guest house where State House political advisor Kaizar Zulu is allegedly lodging.

The Roan parliamentary by-election was necessitated by the expulsion of Kambwili from the PF and the eventual declaration of the seat as vacant by Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini.

The NDC is fielding Joseph Chishala whose main competition is the ruling PF’s Joel Chibuye.
