Police cancel NDC Chipata rally because of Kambwili

Police in Chipata has abruptly cancelled a National Democratic Congress (NDC) rally scheduled for Saturday despite issuing the party with a permit.

The Police according to NDC Officials said at the time they issued the opposition party (NDC) with a permit, they did not know that NDC leader will be among those to speak.

And police has further told NDC officials that the rally can only take place without Kambwili in attendance.

A Chipata Deputy Commanding Officer, only identified as Chilekwa, told the NDC leadership that went to prepare the Mpezeni Park, the venue of the rally that it has been cancelled.

Chilekwa said the police were not informed that Kambwili would be one of the speakers at the rally when they authorised it.

Meanwhile, the NDC leaders which includes Menyani Zulu and Lombani Musichili went to seek clarity from Eastern Province police commissioner Luckson Sakala who confirmed that the police command had cancelled the rally.

The commissioner said the rally could only go ahead if Kambwili left the province for Lusaka.
Dozens of police officers in riot gear have sealed off Mpezeni Park to ensure that the rally does not go ahead.
