Police blocks M’membe’s rally, cites national security concerns

The Police says there are national security concerns following the Chingola incidence where President Hakainde Hichilema was stoned while addressing a rally.

And Police has since blocked the opposition Socialist Party from holding a public rally in Mufulira on the Copperbelt.

Responding to a letter of notification for a rally, Police cited among other reasons national security.

Dr Fred M’membe who heads the Socialist Party says the democratic spaces have continued shrinking in Zambia.

“The democratic space keeps shrinking in Zambia. Zambia Police’s response to the Socialist Party’s planned rally in the Copperbelt tomorrow, Saturday,” Dr M’membe said.

“Since Hakainde Hichilema’s UPND government took power, the Socialist Party has been blocked from holding a rally in Zambia,” he said.

Not only Socialist Party but the other opposition political parties have accused President Hichilema of shrinking democratic space which he himself was victim in opposition.

Zambia goes to the polls in August of 2026.
