Police arrest Copperbelty University students over riot

Police in Kitwe have picked 16 students from the Copperbelt University (CBU) following Sunday’s riot.

The students rioted blocking Jambo and Nkana East roads with logs which they were burning and threw stones at other road users over the continued accommodation challenges at the University.

Police officers dispersed the Students but later they again mobilized and were seen in the central district where they protested displaying their mattresses and beddings.

The Students were angry with management’s directive to security personal to chase some students that are squatting with their colleagues due to lack of accommodation.

This sparked the riot. Riot Police had to be mobilized to calm the situation and stop the students from causing damage to property.

Provincial Police Commissioner Mary Tembo has confirmed the arrests.

By Monday morning the situation had since retained to normal.
