‘PF’s Roan loss a glimmer of hope for Zambians’

Human rights activist Laura Miti has hailed the people of Roan Constituency for rejecting the ruling Patriotic Front (PF), saying they have reminded every suffering Zambian that politicians serve at the people’s pleasure.

And US-based blogger Irvine Mbanga says the ruling party’s humiliating defeat in Roan signifies a glimmer of hope for Zambians.

The opposition NDC and its candidate Joseph Chishala (pictured) caused a major upset in yesterday’s by-elections by defeating the PF, who were favourites to retain the seat, by a wide margin. Chishala garnered 8,665 votes to 5,533 votes managed by the PF’s Joel Chibuye to become the NDC’s first ever member of parliament.

After the PF’s defeat was confirmed by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), Miti took to Twitter to pay tribute to the people of Roan Constituency.

“The people of Luanshya have reminded every hungry Zambian, every unpaid worker, every young person out of school, every unemployed youth that politicians serve at the people’s pleasure. Thank you Roan!” tweeted Miti.

Earlier, Miti, an ardent critic of the PF regime led by President Edgar Lungu, tweeted: “Luanshya! Emphatic in its rejection of a massive plea from the President, the Vice President, majority of Cabinet, ruling party SG, loads of money, threats, promises. #Roan”

Meanwhile, US-based blogger and UPND supporter Irvine Mbanga wrote following the PF’s shocking defeat:

The ruling Patriotic Front’s loss of the Roan Parliamentary seat to NDC offers Zambians hope that they can be beaten and ousted from power come 2021.

It is undeniable that they have swept almost all countrywide by-election in the past from ward, council, mayoral to parlaimentary elections and this loss to NDC, in their stronghold has given us a belief that they are very beatable.

With the UPND factor playing a bigger role in delivering the seat to NDC without which PF would have retained it, it remains clear that a United Opposition and not split political parties is what we need to rid the nation of President Edgar Lungu and his PF government.

The clear victory and big electoral margin in the polls tell another story; that rigging can not take place if the marginal difference is bigger and not close as has been in past elections. As long as we vote in large numbers against PF, even ECZ will have no way to rig elections in their favour.

All in All;
Viva NDC.
Viva Kambwili.
Viva UPND.
Viva Luanshya Voters.

Lets keep the same spirit of unity come 2021, it will dawn.
