PF Ministers storm Mulungushi, harass ECZ officers

The Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has expressed shock at alleged attempts by some Cabinet Ministers to intimidate Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officers.

This morning, ECZ Chairperson Justice Ireen Mambilimba revealed that some politicians went to the ECZ tallying center at Mulungushi Conference Center in the early hours of this morning and threatened the ECZ personnel.

She went on to strongly castigate politicians that are threatening her staff with dismissals if the did not ‘cooperate’ with them.

It has since been revealed that the politicians Justice Mambilimba was referring to are Ministers Nkandu Luo, and Jean Kapata.

In a statement released to Zambian Eye, UPND Campaign Manager Dipak Patel said his party was shocked by media reports of attempted interference at the ECZ offices by the two ministers.

“Allegations have surfaced that the PF cabinet minsters have sought to apply pressure on ECZ officials to distort the results,” he said.

“These accusations are even worse than PF behaviour at ZNBC in recent weeks in which PF cabinet ministers reportedly sought to apply pressure on the national broadcaster to influence coverage of their campaign.”

“Whilst we are alarmed by these reports we remain confident in the ECZ. We know they are working hard to uncover such schemes and address any resultant distortions accordingly. We urge the ECZ to take strong action against the perpetrators.” he concluded.
