PF govt now orders Zambeef meat with aldehyde out of the market

Government has recalled from the market all of Zambeef’s meat product that have tested positive of aldehyde a chemical which some people say is harmful.

Health Minister, Joseph Kasonde said government has done its investigations which has proved that some of the imported meat contains the chemicals.Dr. Kasonde said on Thursday that the meat has been recalled to protect the public.

He has also started that government might consider taking other options or cause of action after consulting stakeholders on the health effect of the product.

And Commerce Minister, Emmanuel Chenda has has expressed sadness at the development emerging from the company. He has since challenged  the Zambia Bureau of Standards to be vigilant and not allow products that may endanger people.

Zambeef has although denied the accusations.

But a Senior Lecturer in the School of Natural Sciences Namboole Moses Munkombwe wonders why there has been so much talk of the chemical which he says is not a problem.

“Aromatic aldehydes are not a problem,” Munkombwe said. “They are simply added to meat products for the aroma as the name suggests. Aroma is just a nice scent.”
