Some members from the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) have moved in to provide security at the residence of former president Edgar Lungu.

This follows information that the State had withdrawn some Police Officers who were deployed at the residence.

Images circulating show some PF Cadres camped at Lungu’s Ibex residence in the capital Lusaka.

But Police says the officers who were deployed there have been reassigned to other duties and that they will be replaced.

It has also emerged that there were more than the three required number to guard the former president.

Insiders within Government tell Zambian Eye that the number of Police Officers maybe reduced to the provided number in the constitution.

The PF also fears that the Police who faced resistance last week at the residence maybe planning another raid.

There are indications that President Hakainde Hichilema would want to silence Lungu and ensure that he is out of the Zambian politics and abandon growing calls to contest the 2026 elections.

“How can he be talking about ukubwelela ako (coming back) kutumpa uku,” President Hichilema reacted to Lungu’s public appearances that were attracting attention from some Citizens.

Lungu has said nothing about whether he would step back after he quit in August 2021 after losing elections to Hichilema.

However delays to hold an extraordinary General Assembly to elect a successor are viewed as a scheme to maintain him as PF leader to face Hichilema in 2026.
