Zambia and Red Bull Salzburg striker Patson Daka has been nominated for the 2017 Aiteo CAF Youth Player of the Year award.

According to a partial list of the Aiteo CAF Awards 2017 nominees, Zambia is vying for awards in two other categories, with the Under -20 national team nominated for the Men’s National Team of the Year award, while top referee Janny Sikazwe is up for the Referee of the Year award.

Daka has had a stellar 2017, winning the UEFA Youth League with Red Bull Salzburg and helping Zambia to its first ever Under-20 AFCON title (he scored in both finals).

The 19-year-old also played a starring role in Zambia’s memorable run to the quarterfinals of the Under-20 World Cup and contributed 2 goals to Zambia’s unsuccessful campaign for a Russia 2018 World Cup spot.

He is up against Kreppin Diatta of Senegal, Luther Singh of South Africa, Eric Ayiah of Ghana and Mali’s Salam Giddou. The red hot forward will be hoping to emulate countryman Clifford Mulenga who won the award in 2007.

And Zambia, who won the U20 AfCON in March and reached the quarter-finals of the U20 World Cup in South Korea in May, have been nominated for national team of the year alongside Cameroon, Egypt, the Mali Under-17 national team and Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Sikazwe has been nominated for referee of the year and will compete against Bamlak Tessema from Ethiopia, Ghead Grisha (Egypt), Malang Diedhiou (Senegal), Mahdi Abid Charef (Algeria) and Papa Bakary Gassama (Gambia). He refereed the FIFA Club World Cup final between Spanish giants Real Madrid and Kashima Antlers of Japan last December as well as the 2017 AfCON final between Cameroun and Egypt.

The winners of the awards will be decided by votes from the members of the CAF Technical & Development Committee, CAF Media Experts Panel and Independent Media and TV Consultants.

Meanwhile, only members of the CAF Referees’ Committee will elect the Referee of the Year.

The Awards Gala will take place on Thursday, 4 January 2018 in Accra, Ghana.
