Over 100 Zambians are expected to take part in the Comrades Marathon in South Africa next month.
The Comrades Marathon is an ultramarathon of approximately 88 kilometres, run annually in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Province between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It is the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon.
The Lusaka Fitness Squad (LFS), which organised the send-off for the runners, has expressed gratitude for the support received.
“On behalf of the entire organising team and our incredible LFS runners, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you who joined us for the Comrades Send-Off Breakfast,” said Katai Chola, The newly elected Lusaka Fitness Squad president.
Meanwhile, Lusaka lawyer and sports administrator Dickson Jere has called for increased support to enhance Zambian participation in the historic marathon.
“There is a need to engage the government on the next trip, given the high number of runners going for the prestigious Comrades Marathon in South Africa. We need a charter flight to take these runners into Durban draped in Zambian colours. It is sad that some of the runners will travel by public transport (bus) to Durban. We can do this!” Jere wrote.
He further urged LFS to engage with Zambia Athletics (ZA) and consider becoming members.
“The club, despite being social, is actually contributing a lot to the resurgence of athletics in Zambia. It organises our biggest marathons, ABSA and KK, and yet they are not part of the national federation.
“I encouraged the Zambian runners to remember that they carry the Zambian flag the moment they enter South Africa, and therefore, they are one team despite coming from various clubs. They are our ambassadors,” Jere said.
As part of the send off, Lusaka Fitness Squad organised special guest speakers from South Africa to impart some knowledge and share their experience at the Comrades Marathon. These included;
1. Tete Dijana – Comrades Marathon Champion (2022 and 2023)
2. Sipho Marima – Ultra-Endurance Coach & Motivator
3. Shahieda Thungo Mahki– Spirit of Comrades Award Winner & Inspirational Pacer.
