The Opposition Alliance comprising Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD), Alliance for Better Zambia (ABZ), Zambians for Empowerment and Development (ZED)  and People’s Party (PP) has decided to field one common candidate in future by-elections.

The Alliance made the decision at a meeting held today, February 27, 2014 in Lusaka.

“The decision was made at a meeting today in Lusaka attended by party leaders namely Dr. Nevers Mumba MMD, Mr. Mike Mulongoti PP, Dr Fred Mtesa ZED and Fr Frank Bwalya ABZ,” disclosed Fr. Bwalya who is the Alliance’s Spokesperson, Thursday evening.

The meeting was chaired by General Malimba Masheke.

MMD and ABZ fielded candidates in the last held Katuba by-election that was won by UPND’s Jonas Shakafuswa.

Shakafuswa polled 4, 781 with his closest rival Moses Chilando of the Patriotic Front (PF) polling 2, 747.

Third was the Cecil Holmes of the MMD who got 734 while Joseph Mushalika of NAREP came fourth 566 votes.

Fifth was Fr. Frank Bwalya’s Alliance for a Better Zambia (ABZ) candidate Patricia Mwashingwele with 393 votes. She was followed by Allan Malawo of UNIP who managed 124 votes. Cozmo Mumba’s National Revolution Party’s Shakespeare Mwakamui trailed and only managed 23 votes.

  1. They wouldn’t even have beaten the Zairean call boy Chilando. Just recognise that MMD had its time and now the time is for UPND to provide the real leadership that has eluded Zambia for so long. Otherwise, they arte just there to split some little vote in favour of their parent party PF.

  2. MMD wont allow any other party to field its candidate in its former stronghold.

  3. Please do your sums, all the alliance votes put together amount to nothing near winning. Swallow your pride and let UPND lead the alliance, with HH as your presidential candidate. What is important now is to remove PF and save what is left of Zambia and not whether Nevers or HH should head for State House.

    • No @PM. What is IMPORTANT is to elect a government that will bring development to Zambia.

You must “VOTE FOR” and not “VOTE AGAINST”

    • Please Zambians, let’s avoid a situation, where we move from the PF Bemba Politics to UPND Tonga Politics. We may end up in a worse situation. For now we need a leader who can bring healing, unity and forgiveness in the nation. These traits among others are essential for development. This Bemba or Tonga talk is very sad indeed. Some of the Leaders even profess to be very educated, but lack wisdom.

  4. By the way is Mulongoti and Mtesa alone in PP and ZED respectively. I think let Cosmo Mumba lead the alliance. He is more popular and hard working when it comes to vigillance on the ground. I mean if dislodging PF is all what is important, then qualities of a president are not important just like Michael Sata was voted just to boot out MMD. Surely people can’t have expected democracy from a man who kills democracy let alone 90 days horse crap.

  5. Yaba! Unworkable. MMDis is in permanent coma beyond resuscitation..ABZ contributed to Zambia’s current mess.. NAREP, FDD, PP are pf sympathizers.. UPND is the only hope the way things are at present. Just join upnd.

  6. My question is what is MMD doing with the likes of Bwalya, Mulongoti and Mtesa? These parties have no following and are riding on MMD? What is Nevers doing? Look Mulongoti did not even field anyone in Katuba but adding the votes of Bwalyas party and Nevers’ did not yield anything but near zero. So why is Nevers wasting the party’s time with this alliance. The way to go is to dissolve parties like Bwalyas, Mtesa and Mulongotis party. Whats wrong with them joining MMD? Please HH do not join this useless alliance it is going nowhere. What do you expect with leaders like Masheke at the hem? Masheke never won any election. He was a nominated member in Kaundas UNIP. This is a waste of time.

  7. Just want to encourage the Alliance that, they should ignore these UPND political analysts, who always use UPND/HH as the yard stick that the Zambians have shifted the support to them.Sometimes advising these characters is a waste of time, breath and energy.Let us just wait for 2016,wina azalila. They seem to have contracted an incurable disease of not being advisable. This was purely a tribal campaign.Zambia risks moving from pathetic PF Bemba Politics to vegengful UPND Tonga Tribal Politics.God forbid.

  9. The alliance of the said parties stands very little chance of coming up with one president. I know of one man Mumba of MMD, if it is not him then he pulls out of the alliance. He has always been like that and will be like that, if anything if there is an offer from Micheal he very likely to take it. Why do think he tried to visit State quietly. Remember he sold the opposition parties and become vice president. he did it he can do it again.
