Opinion poll: Close contest as HH leads Lungu

A quick opinion poll carried out on Zambian Eye’s Facebook group page has revealed a close contest between the two front-runners in the January 20 presidential election, with Opposition United Party for National Development candidate Hakainde Hichilema leading his rival Edgar Lungu of the ruling Patriotic Front by a margin of seven percentage points.

This is in contrast with the other polls conducted by Zambian Eye, which have indicated a much wider margin in favour of the UPND leader, averaging over 40 percentage points.

Of the 171 members who took part in the poll, Hichilema accounted for 49.7% while runner-up Lungu got 42.1%. Elias Chipimo of NAREP was a distant third with 2.3% while fourth and fifth position belonged to Tilyenji Kaunda of UNIP and Godfrey Miyanda of the Heritage party wth 1.8% and 1.1% respectively. The rest of the candidates got 0.6% each.

Zambian Eye’s Facebook group has a membership of over 21,676 people of diverse political inclinations.
