Operation Watermelon in action

Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has defended its recently launched ‘Operation Watermelon’ after President Edgar Lungu described it as an “evil plan aimed at causing havoc in the nation.”

UPND secretary general Stephen Katuka has also described as absurd Lungu’s accusations that the party has a plan in place called ‘Operation Fear’, which will unleash violence and fear on voters.

President Lungu earlier on a campaign rally claimed UPND will use ‘Operation Fear’ to unleash a wave of violence and fear on voters ahead of next Thursday’s polls.

But Katuka said such kind of reporting without any reference to facts is extremely irresponsible and only supports PF attempts to create a climate of fear and intimidation ahead of polls.

“It is under the PF that innocent citizens have been shot down by police with no justice, it is under the PF that unarmed civilians have been kicked in the head outside police stations with no one arrested, and it is the PF President himself who took power of his party through a conference decided by pangas rather than policy,”  Katuka said.

He said the PF should know that the only operation UPND has active is ‘Operation Watermelon.’

“This Operation is 100% peaceful and designed to offer our supporters protection by wearing PF regalia but voting UPND. They need not fear because their vote is their choice and their vote is secret,”  Katuka said in a statement.

“We would like to remind voters that as we get closer to elections the PF is desperate to talk only of tribalism and violence because they are not comfortable talking about policy issues such as unemployment and the rising cost of living.”

He added, “I would like to restate here for the record that UPND completely rejects these accusations. Whoever is peddling them is behaving with little regard for the peace and unity of our country. We want change but it will come through ballots not bullets

  1. Stop wasting time guys it’s time to work now. You should know where people like keizar zulu, Edgar ngoma, emmanuel mwamba just to mention a few are. The rigging machinery revolves around these people. Just mark these characters.

  2. You must be a very dull person not to understand that useless “Operation Watermelon” is a recipe for chaos. There is no strategy in such a useless idea rather than to cause confusion among party supporters. It is this confusion that eventually leads to calamities. So, what is Katuka saying? You create a confusing environment and expect sanity to prevail?

  4. It has saved a lot of lives on the opposition side, whoever calls such an operation evil is coming from the pity of EL himself , unless such a person enjoys to see opposition members killed for putting on their party attire.

  7. Mjb and one nation exposing their dullness once again. How does this formula cause violence, and how satanic is it? So you want those supporting UPND to continue exposing themselves so that they can be victims of political violence from your cadres and police guns like the way it was in chawama where that innocent girl was killed? So to you Mjb who is satanic between the one who kills and the one being murdered? You must be insane and you need to undergo a mental checkup.

  10. people must understand that the essence of party regalia rests only in psychological manipulation of people’s minds. The choice of the mind, under natural circumstances is independent and rests in personal choice of candidate. In my view it is the party regalia that bring confusion and uncalled for misunderstandings. UPND. through the operation Mellon has clearly demonstrated that party regalia is a share waste of the much needed resources. Please politicians do not corrupt voters with the confusion of supplying the so called party regalia. Voters can do better without!!! ZAMBIANS VOTE WISELY!!
