Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has called on President Edgar Lungu to urgently prioritise the nomination of substantive Chairperson at the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

In a statement Tuesday morning to Zambian Eye, Hichilema says there is need to find a replace Justice Ireen Mambilima who previously held the position before being appointed Chief Justice.

“Mr. Lungu and his PF government must know that ECZ is such an important institution that it cannot continue without the top leadership such as the Chairperson,” Hichilema says.

The UPND president says as the Commission will soon embark on a voter registration exercise and preparations for next year’s tripartite elections it is essential that planning for such important undertakings is overseen by a Chairperson that has the confidence of political parties, civil society and the public.

Hichilema says a suitable name must be nominated for possible ratification at Parliament so that whoever takes over has sufficient time to get to grips with the huge task ahead, address the deficiencies identified in previous elections and build relationships with the necessary stakeholders.

“Confidence in the election process starts with the kind of people that are appointed to manage the electoral process, hence the need to urgently identify an appropriate successor for Justice Mambilima who is widely respected,” says Hichilema.

  1. hh just shut up,

Are you the one who elevated the previous Chairman or Lungu. Why do you behave as though you are the nominator? You very well know that whether you say it or not the President will not even ask you to nominate a name. Everybody knows that it is the President who nominates the name why pose your nose into the system you do not participate in?
To say the least you are a pathetic politician and that,s why you can never be trusted by Moonga. Many will resign from upnd …just wait..

  2. That is good observaton by HH. This is what we call leadership. Only those who don’t want to think before they say somthing cannot see sense in this great challenge thrown to visionless Edgar Lungu. Here is wisdom ba Edgar toleni tata tuleya patashi.

  3. There goes a man with vision and a plan. How does someone nominate less than one month for the new voter registration process and be sure he/she will make the right decisions. Be realistic PF and for once open your eyes to the light side and listen to sensible advise. VIVA HH!

  5. President Lungu must not overlook and pass through the red light at the robots just because HH is behind him. He ought to look left, look right and look left again before crossing. In similar sense, he must look at the people from all angles, internally, externally and education wise. HH has no choice but to wait. The same man shall start laughing and castigating you for your choice whether good or bad. Remember ECL, that “a bit of frangrancy always clings to the hand that gives you roses”. This is to say that whom you appoint, whether he/she performs well or poorly, the others will say this is Mr Lungu’s choice.
