Nkana stun Al Ahly Nkana beat Egyptian giants Al Ahly 1-0 to improve their chances of making it to the CAF Confederation Cup semifinal, reports Zambian Eye’s Limbikani Msamba.

Nkana’s win was their first over Al Ahly from four meetings since 1983 after one draw and two defeats against their Egyptian nemesis prior to Saturday’s win at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.

The first half ended goalless in what was a dull opening 45 minutes that Al Ahly dominated for the first 18 minutes. Nkana goalkeeper Rabson Muchelenganga was called into action early on when he had to dive low to deny Mohamed Alwakee from point blank range in the 7th minute in what proved to be the visitors best chance of the first half.

The hosts too had a one great chance of their own in the 19th minute when striker Reynold ‘Sate Sate’ Kampamba volleyed wide from close range when it seemed easier to score. The deadlock was finally broken in the 50th minute from the penalty spot. Noel Phiri took down captain Donashano Malama’s long ball and advanced on goal but was upended by Samr Saad and referee Bernard Camrille of the Seychelles pointed to the spot.

Veteran defender Billy Mwanza stepped up to send goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy the wrong way and hand Nkana their second successive Group B win followin their 4-3 victory over Etoile du Sahel on July 26. Nkana move to seven points after the win and are now just one point behind Al Ahly who continue to lead Group B into the final round of games on August 23.
