Former South African President Nelson Mandela’s health is improving daily and he is now able to sit up for minutes at a time, his youngest daughter told state broadcaster SABC.

The 95-year-old has been in a Pretoria hospital for two months for treatment of a recurrent lung infection. The government said late last month his condition remained critical but was showing improvement.

Zindzi Mandela told SABC on Friday her father was becoming increasingly alert.

“He’s fine. Tata now manages to sit up, like now he sits up in a chair for a few minutes in a day, every day you know he becomes more alert and responsive. Tata is determined not to go anywhere anytime soon, I cannot stress this enough,” she said, referring to him by the Xhosa word for father.

“He just doesn’t have the strength of a man, he has the strength that is beyond anything that can be explained. Because even now with the challenges to his health, he somehow manages to bounce back when everyone assumes this is the end.”

Mandela’s victory in the first multiracial elections in 1994 marked the end of the apartheid system. Four years earlier, he was released after 27 years in prison under white minority rule, 18 of them at the notorious Robben Island penal colony.

  2. Great to know that no one has monopoly to life. The author of life decides when people should leave planet earth and where they should go. Whoever is near Ndat’a luna Mandela should do the needful – ensure he is at peace with and is in the Lord Jesus Christ – Jesus Himself said in John 14v6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” and please as Ndate Zindzi Mandela to confess according to Romans 10:9-10 (he may already have done so – i do not know) with his mouth that “Jesus is Lord and believe in his heart that God raised him (Jesus) from the dead” and Nelson Mandela will enter Heaven when he finally leaves this earth at a good ripe age of >100. It would terrible for him to be ushered into hell by demons. God is no respector of men, according to Acts 10vs34-35, 2Peter 3vs9, 1 Timothy 2vs4-6

  3. Certain sections of society (even some leaders) have categorically questioned the continued efforts to sustain the health of Mr. Nelson Mandela. Some have even suggested that maybe it’s time to go.
But this is how the world rewards selfless leaders.
Not a few have fought for freedom, but the difference lies in the reality that the majority that fought and won rewarded themselves by living like kings in the 10th Century. Not so with Madiba, after 27yrs in prison Nelson achieved the desire of his heart; the black man’s redemption. But when some would have gone on an ‘extravagance’ rampage, Nelson quit. Without having ever busked in the glory of a monarch, emperor, or dictator.
You think people can ignore that? No! No! No!
Mr Ban Ki-Moon (UN secretary-general) once visited Mr Mandela; he was perplexed by one virtual: the humility of a man so great. Madiba seems to win the hearts of men and women effortlessly. And this will continue, even after he’s gone—in fact it will be greater.
Nelson is an oasis of peace.
Mandela is not feared. He is loved!
Tata, we need you! Get well soon Madiba!

  7. Tate Nelson M. Mandela ki buitumelo ku utwa kulu mwa tungatunga mulimu a mietelele mu pile. You shall always have a loving place in my heart for what you did to mankind in your life time the majority of us living now or departed from this earth have failed to do what u did, I do not know of any one who sacrificed his life, left his dear wife and children to be locked up for 27 years in prison just to make sure other people are freed from oppression and exploitation of one man by another, I shall always love you and wish you many more years to come and enjoy living in peace and may God Bless you.
