NDC drama: Musenge out in the cold?

Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice President Joseph Akafumba has overruled the decision by the party’s Secretary General Mwenya Musenge to fire Chishimba Kambwili from his position as the party’s consultant, saying Musenge had no backing from the Central Committee.

Yesterday, Musenge announced that the NDC had dismissed Kambwili on grounds that he had dented the name of the party with his racism scandal. He also claimed the Roan Member of Parliament’s ongoing court battle against his expulsion from the Patriotic Front was hindering the growth of the NDC, further accusing Kambwili of pocketing funds meant for party mobilisation.

But Kambwili responded by expelling Musenge and replacing him with NDC National Youth Chairman Charles Kabwita in an acting capacity.

And addressing a media briefing on Thursday, Akafumba said Kambwili remains the NDC consultant and 2021 presidential candidate as there had not been any central committee meeting resolution to expel him or terminate his services.

“We would like to give the party’s position on the statement which has been attributed to our secretary general Mwenye Musenge. The statement made has no support of the Central Committee of the political party and the general membership,” Akafumba said. “We wish to state that an expulsion of any member of the party as a consultant, agents and others cannot and can never be done by any individual of the party but it is by the resolution of the full central committee of the party.

“The position of the party is that we are bound to follow the [party] constitution. Anything outside the provision of the [party] constitution cannot be supported by the party and it is an assault of the [NDC] constitution, rendering such an action null and void.”

He has since announced that he will be chairing a Central Committee meeting this morning at the party secretariat in Lusaka where the fate of Musenge will be decided.

And Akafumba has defended Kambwili in the wake of racism allegations, saying the former information minister “is not a racist and he has never, in his life, been a racist”.

He explained that what drove Kambwili to say what he said in the video that is circulating was his passion for the suffering poor and the unemployed youths.

“This therefore can be attributed to poor governance in this country which promotes foreigners to mistreat indigenous Zambians. It is not a secret that this country is facing huge unemployment levels among the youths ; therefore to see foreigners doing jobs generally undertaken by locals against huge unemployment is something that touched Kambwili,” said Akafumba.

Meanwhile, NDC youth leader, Charles Kabwita has rubbished reports that he has rejected his appointment as new Secretary General. A Facebook page run by State House called ‘Smart Eagles’ reported that Kabwita had rejected his appointment on grounds that Kambwili had no powers to make any appointments in the party.

But Kabwita quickly responded in the comments section, saying: “Total lie from pf, I have not rejected any appointment in NDC, tu pf stop this foolishness for once.”
