National dialogue and reconciliation a waste of time – Haabazoka

Economics Association of Zambia (EAZ) president Lubinda Haabazoka has trashed the imminent national dialogue and reconciliation talks between the country’s political players, calling the process a waste of time and resources and suggesting that the country needs to focus its energies on economic development instead.

In a Facebook post titled “politics and economics”, Dr Haabazoka argues that President Edgar Lungu’s diary “should not be suffocated with talks that cannot yield any positives to national economic development.”

“The border between the two (politics and economics) is very narrow. For those of us desperate to see a paradigm shift in Zambia’s economic development agenda, it pains to see focus on non economic issues,” Dr Haabazoka wrote on his Facebook page today.

The Russia-trained economist says while reconciliation talks are important in every country, they cannot take center stage in a country desperate to outplay its neighbors in terms of economic development.

“My advice to stakeholders is that let us have more multi-partisan economic talks rather than reconciliations as if the country is coming from a civil war!!!!

“We cannot suffocate the President’s diary with talks that cannot yield any positives to national economic development!!!

“My advice to all political parties is that give Zambians a break from politics. Let us concentrate on national economic development!” said Dr Haabazoka, who is widely seen to be a sympathiser of the PF regime.

He proposed that if talks were to be held, they should concentrate on how to use CDF to uplift livelihoods of citizens, how to speak with one voice against multinationals who do not want to pay tax and how to empower youths and create jobs.

“It is wasting time and resources to engage in dialogues that do not interrogate issues of national economic development!!

“Zambians should look out for those that offer ideas and solutions and not those that can insult the most!!!!

“My advice to all stakeholders is that let us focus on national economic development because our aim is to achieve vision 2030!!!

Dr Haabazoka said the authorities must not be preoccupied with issues that will derail them from national economic matters and blamed the lack of progress on the Lusaka-Ndola dual carriageway project to cheap criticism and politics.

“Because of criticism and cheap politics, no works are being done on the Lusaka – Ndola road where we continue to loose lives!!! We need a dual courage way there immediately!!!!
