NDI Responds to False Social Media Claims

LUSAKA – False claims on social media have misrepresented the National Democratic Institute’s (NDI’s) work in Zambia. These claims indicate NDI made statements regarding a parallel vote tabulation (PVT) and is working with Transparency International Zambia (TIZ). NDI has not issued, and will not be issuing, any statements in relation to a PVT. The Institute also has no association with TIZ or its work around the elections.

For the 2015 elections, NDI conducted a training workshop for 10 political parties to aid their organization and training of party polling agents. NDI has also provided technical assistance to the Christian Churches Monitoring Group (CCMG) for its election observation initiatives, both related to general citizen observation and its PVT. CCMG is the owner of all data from its observation efforts and the sole author of statements related to those efforts, including its PVT. CCMG has made two statements thus far on the quality of Election Day processes but has made no statement on the results of the election and will not do so until after the Election Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has made its official pronouncement.

NDI encourages all Zambians, including those making use of social media, to check the accuracy of their statements and those they circulate while the ECZ completes the important task of tallying the votes cast on Tuesday and today.

NDI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.
