Mufulira on raping spree after sister’s mysterious death

In a rather weird act of revenge following his sister’s mysterious death, a 28-year-old man of Mufulira allegedly went on rampage raping and attacking women, the Ndola High Court has heard.

During trial, a police officer narrated how he captured the accused, Daniel Mulaya, using a mobile phone application known as Find my device.

This is in a case in which Mulaya is facing seven counts of Aggravated Robbery and three counts of rape which committed against women.

Allegations are that Muyala would break into homes occupied by women and threaten his prey with a knife, a taser gun and a chisel.

Once he attacks the women, Muyala threatened the victims by telling them that he could not fail to kill them because his sister equally died a mysterious death.

During hearing yesterday before Judge Daniel Musonda, State advocate Innocent Kamunga informed court that 23 witnesses were lined up to testify.

One victim narrated how she was awaken from her sleep by Muyala at around 02:00 hours.

She said when she asked what he was doing, Mulaya demanded for money and threatened to kill her if she did not produce it.

“On March 8, this year, he tapped my shoulder and when I asked what he wanted, he demanded for money but I did not have and thereafter, I told him I only had a K300 in my account.

“He then suggested that we go to the ground near my house to make a mobile transfer. While we were there, he demanded for more money and asked me to send more during the day to which I obliged, ” she said.

The victim said Mulaya commanded her to go and get his younger sister who had remained at home so that she could go accompany him to the ground and perform another mobile money transaction.

“When we reached home, he got my younger sister and they went to the ground leaving me,” she said.

The victim narrated that after the two left, she quickly went to her landlord who unfortunately refused to come out as she was scared of the being attacked.

“After a few minutes while I sat helplessly, I saw a group of men with pangas and sticks whom my landlord had called for help. Then some men then went to look for the accused but he ran away,” she said.

And the victim’s younger sister told court how Malaya rejected a K100 which she had in her mobile account and instead demanded for sex.

When asked by Kamunga the type of sex Mulaya had with her, the victim told court that the sex was vaginal and no protection was used.

“After having unprotected sex with me, he then told me to go back and asked me to call my sister as he forgot the pin code for her mobile money on her phone. Fortunately as I reached home, I saw a group of men who came to our rescue,” she said.

The two victims told court around 05:00 hours, police officers managed to go to their home but by that time, Mulaya had already bolted.

Meanwhile, while at Mufulira Central police station to formally report the case, one officer who had gone to deposit his fire arm after night duties helped to aprehend Mulaya using an App called ‘find my device’.

Bright Lukomba 25, a constable who has served in the police service for a year, managed to track Mulaya using the device.

“I found the two ladies at the police and I asked one of them if her phone was connected to Google. I then requested her to give me her account to track her phone using the APP. The APP shows the location of the phone stolen.

“Together with my colleague and the other victim we went to the place which the App showed the phone was, that was in Lumumba Avenue heading to Hindu Hall and as we approached the place, we saw a gentleman in the opposition direction and as he saw us, he attempted to make a turn but we apprehended him, ” he narrated.

And in cross examination, Lukomba told court that he was not an expert in information communication Technology but has the interest in learning more about it.
