As mentioned earlier online at www.zambianeye.com in our January, 19th, article “Lupita Nyongo the New style Icon,”about her attending this year’s Essence Awards.
Well, she was finally honored with an award at the luncheon of Essence magazine’s seventh annual Black Women in Hollywood on Thursday , February 24th, 2014.
The star of “12 years a slave,”Lupita Nyong’o says, she repeatedly prayed to God asking for lighter skin during her adolescence … because she thought having dark black skin was a curse.
She was teased growing up for her “night-shaded skin” reports TMZ … So she prayed on a regular basis that God would change her.
With a mirror being every girl’s necessity Lupita never even dared to look at herself in the mirror… she said “Every day I experienced the same disappointment of being just as dark as I had been the day before.”
Finally, hope came her way when she saw supermodel Alek Wek — one of the first dark skinned supermodels it really helped boost her confidence … because influence-rs like Oprah Winfrey who one day on TV praised Beyonce for having a beautiful smooth skin also praised Alek as a beautiful woman too.
The actress, says she eventually learned that beauty comes in all shades …and hopes to be an inspiration to other young girls with similar concerns. She also jokes but true that at home she puts on wigs sometimes but she’d rather maintain it short.
