Minister Lusambo during his tour

Thousands of Lusaka residents are at risk while 400 are receiving treatment following contaminating of water in Lusaka, provincial Minister Bowman Lusambo has confirmed.

And the Minister has also revealed that most water points in the Zambian capital are not secured.

In a statement availed to Zambian Eye after touring the city to ascertain the cause of the contaminated water, Lusambo identified the areas and said it was due to negligence by the water utility company, Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company.

Below is the statement:

I have had to cut short my annual leave to attend to the urgent matter where thousands of Lusaka residents have been exposed to a case of water contamination resulting in over 400 people requiring medical attention.

After a fact finding mission I undertook today in the company of officials from Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company, WARMA, LCC and the Lusaka Provincial Medical Office, it was clear to see that the occurrence was due to negligence on the part of the water utility.

The poor management of the water points by Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company resulted in the contamination of the borehole supplying the affected areas. Most of the water points in the city are unsecured increasing the risk of mass contamination and even sabotage by enemies of progress.

I have since directed management at Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company to secure the water points and demolish all illegally built structures around these important facilities.

I toured some affected homes and some patients still admitted at UTH and assured our people that government will not allow a reoccurrence of such a very unfortunate incident.
