Opposition MMD’s Peter Phiri has been officially declared winner of the Mukaika parliamentary seat after he beat the ruling PF’s David Phiri with over 7,000 votes in Thursday, September 5, 2013 by-election.
The MMD according to official results announced at 1am Friday polled 9,054 votes while the PF’s Phiri who caused the by-election by resigning from MMD only managed 1, 712 votes.
The NAREP candidate Nigel Mpakateni got 161 votes with UNIP’s Nelson Mwale came last with 136 votes.
Mkaika constituency has 38 polling stations and a total of 11, 295 votes were cast with 232 votes rejected.
We saw it coming. The PF system blundered on several issues, these being:
(a) The PF Govt blundered thru the removal of subsidies on fuel and farming inputs, matters that did not change the life styles of the rich, but negatively impacted on the poor and vulnerable subsistence and commercial farmers and the poor who had to travel to attend to many family issues to several parts of Zambia.
(b) President Sata refused to attend the most important KULAMBA Cultural annual Ceremony of the Chewa people who extend into Central Malawi and Tete Province of Mozambique; but President Sata preferred to travel for electioneering campaigns in Mkaika, which is the headquarter of Paramount Chief Gawa Undi’s chiefdom. This is the worst insult ever unleashed to the Chewa people and the entire Eastern Province.
This evolving anti-PF stance will be sustained in Malambo and Petauke Central. The Kundas still vividly remember Sata’s insults to Chief Jumbe; whereas the Nsengas are still painfully agonising at the dethroning of their Snr. Chief Kalindawalo for PF’s political expediency.
