Some opposition political parties ganged up in defense of diplomats over their support for the debt ridden Post Newspapers.

Alliance for Democracy and Development leader Charles Milupi alongside UPND’s Hakainde Hichilema and Nevers Mumba held a press conference in support of the diplomats’ support of Fred M’membe’s Post Newspapers.

Milupi said the country should bow down to diplomats as they helped fund several developmental areas.

He said that the country should not stand up to the diplomatic corps as they were key partners in development.
Milupi said there was need to reach out to the diplomatic corps than point the exit door when there was a crisis.

Hichilema said the kwacha would tumble in the wake of sentiments by President Edgar Lungu to diplomats that if they were so concerned about the closure of The Post Newspapers they should help them clear their debt.

And Mumba said whose stake on the MMD remains suspect said the country may pay a high price for antagonizing diplomats.

Diplomats met President Lungu to express their concern over the closure of The Post Newspapers with the Head of State clarifying that the state had nothing to do with it.

The Post Newspapers has been closed for over a week following a disputed K53 million debt owed to the Zambia Revenue Authority.

  2. HH has a lot to lose from that stance.
In this move, UPND will only be supported by those who already support them. They will not gain any votes from the neutral people as a result of such a move. In fact it will repel most of the neutral people to the ruling PF. People know that tax is important for the country.
If a new-born baby pays tax (VAT) as parents buy diapers and nappies, why should M’membe be an exception???
Do you know that tax evasion is a serious criminal offence – equivalent to any other for of theft?
Your opposition president, HH says he is going to give free education – is he going to get resources from donors perpetually or he is going to get from taxes?
Look, any govt worth its salt gets its revenues primarily from taxes, licenses, and user fees from the public (people and firms).
So, HH is showing a very serious weakness by supporting non-tax compliance behavior.
If HH continues on this path, even the few people who support him will withdraw their vote.
It simply means that HH is not predictable, and if someone is unpredictable it will erode people’s trust in his message.

  3. This is rubbish. How many firms owe ZRA in taxes? The mines, times of zambia, daily mail, ZNBC even daily nation etc.for instance why single out the post when some of these have nkongoles in billions compared to the Post’s disputed K53m in fact K15m only. The supporters of this political move by PF need to have their heads examined because it’s like they are not normal beings. Their thinking is in reverse and blinded by these failures who have made this country to have these numerous challenges ie job loses, load shedding, corruption, hate speeches, violence, tribalism, high prices of fertilizers and bunga, xenophobia, ritual murders… Abash poverty founders, PF.

    • Closing the weekly post may seem rubbish but it certainly serves a noble purpose, economically and political. Yes, some Govt institutions are owing but it will only take a letter to minister of finance via commissioner zra and the same debt will be converted to govt contribution/funding, so dont bother yourself about this. True also that some Private entities too are are owing. but there is one thing that these particular persons dont do that is to “bring govt into disrepute”. So please If you dont pay tax for 7 years which is a long time, and you are a private individual corporate, dont bite fingers of the state. In other words pay tax and report responsibly.
