Miles installed as Mayor of Lusaka

Miles Sampa has been formally installed as Mayor of Lusaka, taking over from Wilson Kalumba who died earlier this year.

Republican Vice President Inonge Wina graced the colourful installation ceremony that took place at Nakatindi Grounds in Lusaka this morning.

In his acceptance speech, Sampa ordered the Lusaka City Council to immediately open the front gate of the civic center to encourage Lusaka residents to visit the Council and the back entrance should be for emergencies only.

The former Matero MP has also pledged to run the City Council as a business enterprise, further promising to decentralize council operations to the all the seven constituencies in the capital city.

And Mayor Sampa has appointed Matero Catholic priest Father Lastone Lupupa as council Chaplain.

Meanwhile, guest of honour Vice President Wina challenged Sampa to use his vast experience, having served as Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister in various ministries, to deliver results to the people of Lusaka.

She said Sampa was a hardworking man but reminded him that the office he was taking up is a huge responsibility.

Sampa was elected winner of the Lusaka Mayoral race after polling 81, 936 beating his closest rival Kangwa Chileshe of the UPND who got 36, 753.

He promised, among other things, free WiFi and high-rise graveyards to be delivered in his first 100 days in office.
