Maureen Mwanawasa guns for Lusaka Mayor, promises to make cholera history

maureen mwanawasaFormer First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa has successfully filed in her nomination papers to run for Executive Mayor of the city of Lusaka on the United Party for National Development (UPND) ticket.

Dr Mwanawasa is bidding to be the first ever Executive Mayor of the nations capital, but will first have to beat off stiff competition from former Lusaka Mayor Fisho Mwale (independent), veteran sports administrator Elias Mpondela (independent) and the ruling Patriotic Front’s Wilson Kalumba.

She arrived at the Civic Centre accompanied by a group of supporters that included Former Vice President Guy Scott, UPND aspiring candidate for Chongwe Sylvia Masebo and Former Kafue MP Obvious Mwaliteta.

And addressing her supporters shortly after filing in, Dr Mwanawasa pledged to transform the city of Lusaka if elected into office.

She said top of her agenda will be to tackle the perennial cholera outbreaks and ensure that water shortages are addressed.

She said she wants to see a Lusaka City Council that will be able to contribute to the treasury in form of tax contribution.

“The last few years, the councils are like a pit where all the money from the treasury geos for salaries, our new approach among others will be creating a city council that will be able to engage into capital projects,” Dr Mwanawasa said. “We want to have a council that will be financially viable and be able to pay its own salaries and have a good capital base to enable it borrow and invest in infrastructure development.”

“The role of the Mayor this time is executive and one has to be elected into office and for us as UPND, we want to make this office of Mayor to be about the people of Lusaka. We want to see change in the provision of water, the quality of roads and electricity provision and this will entail restructuring Lusaka and not displacing the people entirely as we have seen.”

  1. Good move mama doc. UPND show these guys how to run a viable government, not a “pit where all treasury gets into” as seen under pf govt.

  4. A lady who wouldn’t manage the health of her husband all because of personal aggrandizement is far from being near the corridors of power. When the husband was lying in mortuary in France all she thought was to sneak into Zambia to position wealth for herself. Shame!!! No iota of sympathy will Zambia show to give you votes together with your befriended Bantustans. Watch the pace as we send your Kachema president in forced political retirement out of his failure. ECL 2016. Thanks

Let the sleeping giants lay. If don’t know mwanawansa left a big legacy where all zambia’s debt were cancelled. And mama mwanawansa borrowed some principles to do what she says. God bless you.

  7. chikubabe don’t take the name of God in vain is one of the ten commandments. God is for us all but be careful how you use His name. Only time will tell after elections those God will allow to go in leadership of this country. God allowed even Nebuchadnezzar to rule even when he had no regard for our God. He allows drunkards, thieves and likewise God fearing, the humble to rule at ban appointed time. For us as humans is to speculate but God knows. So chikubabe don’t put yourself in God’s position.

  9. Between her and Kaseba,I would choose this lady. Her husband was a much better manager than Sata. They say behind every successful man there must be a woman. Mwanawasa brought order to Zambia and I think some of those points need to go this woman. So Madam if you are reading this article, just bid your time. Your time will come sooner than later. HH and his Kaseba are not winning the elections, so it will be your time in 2021. However the mayoral election will be between you and Fisho Mwale and it is possible the man may take the day this time but dont give up. Yours is a bigger role in 2021. Good luck!
