As the ruling Patriotic Front party gets entangled in the adoption process for the forthcoming Mufumbwe By-elections, the two aspiring candidates are said to be planning to back the opposition if not adopted.
Stephen Masumba and Eliot Kamwendo are fighting for adoption. Both have hinted to their supporters that if left in preference to the other they would support the candidature of an opposition.
Close allies to the two candidates told Zambian Eye on Thursday evening that the PF adoption process will leave the ruling party divided in the constituency.
“It’s a dice situation in Mufumbwe because both candidates were promised adoption,” Masumba and Kamwendo’s supporters told Zambian Eye in separate interview.
Kamwendo who narrowly lost the elections under UPND ticket in 2011 polls had petitioned the results but he was told to withdraw the petition. While Masumba who won the elections on MMD ticket resigned to join PF as he was allegedly promised that he will be adopted to re-contest the seat on PF ticket.
“The president is trying to intervene that one gives up and will be redeployed to Foreign Service but it’s like none of them is willing to give up,” said an insider within the PF leadership in Lusaka.
According to people close to the two candidates, there is feeling that one is better off wining an election than counting on being deployed to Foreign Service which may not happen.
The two main opposition parties – UPND and MMD are also still tussling as to who would field a candidate. The two parties were expected to meet Thursday evening to discuss the matter.
But information obtained from Mufumbwe indicates that the ground is fertile for the opposition following the ‘fight’ between Masumba and Kamwendo. A Headman who chose to remain anonymity says it would be a ‘white wash’ game for the opposition especially if the UPND is allowed to field candidate.
The opposition are hoping that PF fields Masumba saying he would be very easy to defeat following the manner he has ‘betrayed’ the people who voted for him by defecting to the ruling PF.
