Margrate MwanakatweMargaret Mwanakatwe has made history by being the first Black Zambian to scoop Lusaka Central Constituency since the reintroduction of multi partism in 1991. She is also the first female MP for Lusaka Central since 1991. Further, Mwanakatwe is the first candidate sponsored by a ruling party to scoop the seat while the rest scooped the seats as opposition candidates.

Mwanakatwe, who looked out of her depth when she challenged Charlotte Scott for the Lusaka Central seat, has been a trailblazer all her life. Before politics, Mwanakatwe was an executive in the banking sector.

Mwanakatwe was the first Zambian and first female chief executive at Barclays Bank Zambia. She was also the first woman CEO in all of Barclays Bank’s African subsidiaries. She rose to the position of Managing Director at Barclays Bank Zambia before being appointed Managing Director and CEO at Barclays Bank Ghana in 2004, before later joining United Bank for Africa. During her tenure as MD in Ghana, Mrs Mwanakatwe – who was the first female MD of Barclays Ghana – received the prestigious Order of the Volta, Officer Award, conferred on her by former President John Agyekum Kufuor in July 2008. She was also crowned as the fourth most respected Chief Executive Officer of the year 2008 in a survey of some 100 top CEOs in the country.

Prior to joining Barclays, Margaret was director general of the Zambia Investment Centre. She has been chairperson of the National Aids Council and the Munda Wanga Botanical and Zoological Gardens, and has sat on various boards, including the Zambia Venture Capital Fund, the Zambia Revenue Authority. She is also a member of the Unilever Africa Advisory Council and a patron to the Forest, Wildlife and Human Development Association.
