Mapani takes annual leave amidst critical times

Zambia Electricity and Supply Company (ZESCO) Limited Managing Director Victor Mapani is reported to have taken annual leave.

Two days ago, social media was flooded with reports claiming that Mapani had been placed on forced leave, while some articles indicated that he had been fired.

Meanwhile , ZESCO Chairperson Vickson Nc’ube has clarified that Mapani, has not been fired or placed on forced leave but has simply taken his annual leave.

However, opposition Citizens First (CF) leader Harry Kalaba has expressed concern on the recent decision by Mapani to take annual leave during this critical time.

Kalaba says with industries, both small and large, shutting down due to power rationing, and the country facing extensive load shedding, it is unacceptable for key leadership to be absent.

He says George Mpombo then Energy Minister under Mwanawasa was demoted to Copperbelt Minister for choosing to travel to Paris for an energy meeting when the country was facing a fuel crisis.

” Mapani has gone on annual leave when the country is in near darkness and the authorities think it is normal. This is business as usual when the times are not usual.

The statement made by the ZESCO Board Chairman is, in essence, an admission of failure.

Our citizens deserve reliable and uninterrupted power supply.

Government must immediately recall those contracts of supplying power to our neighboring countries. We need power now,” he said.

Zesco has faced intense scrutiny from the public due to the current load shedding, with many households complaining that the company has failed to adhere to its own load shedding timetable.
