Mama Chibesa Kankasa dies

Freedom fighter Chibesa Kankasa has died in Soutrh Africa where she was receiving specialised medical treatment.

Affectionately referred to as Mama Kankasa, she played a key role in the country’s liberation struggle and served as member of the Central Committee in Kenneth Kaunda’s UNIP, which at the time was the highest policy making body within the government.

Mama Kankas served as Chairperson of the UNIP Women’s League from 1969 to 1988.

She was evacuated to South Africa two weeks ago after falling ill.
