Maize export ban worries grain traders

The Grain Traders Association of Zambia says the sudden ban on the export of mealie meal is likely to affect the contracts traders have signed with millers and other clients in the export market.

Grain Traders had entered into agreements to supply millers with maize following the lifting of the ban on the export of mealie by the Ministry of Agriculture, according to Chambuleni Simwinga.

Simwinga, the Association Executive Director disclosed that the grain traders only managed to offload 100,000 metric tons of maize on the market which was not the amount it targeted to sell to millers.

He told Hot FM Business News that the traders are optimistic that the exports will resume once government ascertains the country’s maize stocks.
