Lusaka province Minister Bowman Lusambo today ordered some chain stores in Lusaka to close and allow their workers to go and vote.

The turn-up of the by-election was low despite the day being declared a holiday.

Lusambo took a random spot checks at selected chain stores across Lusaka to ascertain whether their respective workers had been allowed to vote.

“I visited Pick N Pay, Games Stores, Melissa and Pizza Hut Centro Mall,” he said. “As Lusaka Province Minister and Deputy Campaign Manager for the Patriotic Front candidate in Lusaka, I am deeply concerned over the low voter out recorded so far.”

“These stores employ a large base of our workers. I wish to commend the move taken by Shoprite General Manager Charles Bota who has agreed to close the stores at 13:00 Hours countrywide engaging him at his offices. Further commendation goes to Melissa Supermarkets who have since closed their stores across Lusaka after I engaged them,” stated Lusambo in a statement.

He said the Right to Vote is a fundamental individual human right which should be respected.

“Disenfranchising someone because of the desire to maximize profits cannot be encouraged in a democracy,” he said.
