President Edgar Lungu receives the instruments of power from Dr Guy Scott

Patriotic Front President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has been sworn in as Zambia’s Sixth Republican President, promising to enact a people-driven constitution within the shortest possible time, reports Zambian Eye’s Political Correspondent.

Lungu, 58, took oath before Acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda at around 10:30 hours, with Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe, Zambia’s founding leader Kenneth Kaunda, fourth President Rupiah Banda, losing MMD presidential candidate Nevers Mumba, local and foreign dignitaries, service chiefs and thousands of jubilant PF cadres and sympathisers witnessing the historic event held at Lusaka’s Heroes Stadium.

Former Acting President Guy Scott handed over the instruments of power to the new Commander-in-chief, which comprise the presidential standard, the Zambian constitution and the Zambian flag, signifying the transfer of power to the former Defense and Justice Minister.

The new head of state was also a given 21-gun presidential salute and a fly-past conducted by the Zambia Air Force.

Traditional dances, acrobatics and choral performances at the 50,000 seater stadium which was filled to capacity also gave colour to the ceremony.

And in his inaugural speech, Lungu promised to enact a new people-driven consitution and has with immediate effect appointed Dr Ngosa Simbyakula as Justice Minister to oversee the process.

“I want to hand you a new constitution. We’ll ensure we give you a people driven constitution as per road map we recently released and to this effect I wish to appoint one renowned lawyer Dr Ngosa Simbyakula as Justice Minister to oversee this process,” he said.

Lungu also hailed losing United Party for National development (UPND) candidate Hakainde Hichilema for putting up a formidable performance that saw him come very close to unseating the PF from power.

He also thanked former President Rupiah Banda, whose endorsement has been widely credited for pushing the PF over the line in what has been the most tightly contested presidential election ever seen in the country.“Thanks to His Excellency Mr Rupiah Banda and MMD members for their endorsement which fostered unity.”

He acknowledged the polarising nature of the just ended election, saying: “The journey was fractious and acrimonious at times. The just ended elections shows that there is plenty of work to be done.”

Lungu, who appeared subdued for much of his speech, finally showed some bite when he talked about the new mine tax regime, emphasising that his administration was committed to ensuring that Zambians got a fair share from their mineral resources.

He reiterated his campaign promise of upholding the legacy of late President Michael Sata, adding that his administration will strive to accelerate and sustain the development projects initiated by the fallen leader.

“I promise that I will serve with diligence and submit myself to your collective wisdom. Poverty is unacceptable, it hurts me. We must work hard not through dazzling rhetoric but hardwork to fight it,” said Lungu.

  1. Lungu is a moron who will become a dictator. he does not even look presidential. Now I know why Zambia is always the village of Southern Africa. because Zambians keep voting for these villagers who lack vision. This man stole the election. mugabe is his role model. I doubt he can even dress himself, always looking like a pimp not used to wearing decent clothes. Zambia will never advance with these PF idiots in power.

    • Calling fools yourself. If those who elected President Lungu are fools, then why is hh still crying for the votes which he did not get? Calling people fools will not make hh PRESIDENT OF THIS COUNTRY. The Bible says you shall reap what you sow. If the electorates are fools, then so you are and hh.

  6. As Zambians, we need to change government. For you E.L you will never deliver our needs. All you know is that since you are poor, you want to feed yo stomach. And when this is done, then poverty come in to citizens. You we as a country we’re happy of what you did? As at now you are holding a Bible and making vows to the people in front of the mighty God. I tell you E.L, Bible forbids stealing, and you did what is forbidden. When God decsends you troubles and sicknes known to people, You should not complain anybody. foolish!

  7. the vote he got was more of sympathy plus illiterate voters who just follow the wind. as to 2016, he has already started dropping votes by making promises which he wont even fulfil with his bankrupt government.

  8. Your Excellency, President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. E. C. Lungu:

    Congratulations sir!
This was an elongated marathon; you crossed the finishing line first, bearing the mantle handed down to you by our beloved late president Mr. M. C. Sata (RIP).

I have always boasted among friends that when it comes to democracy, Zambia has only one competitor: the United States of America. We’re on our 6th President in a true democracy.
And I appreciate the support and encouragements from our global family.

It wasn’t easy, so many stumbling blocks, mostly deliberately designed to frustrate you Your Excellency.
However, like I wrote in my previous comments: that was training in readiness for the huge responsibilities that lies ahead.

Your Excellency, you have to hit the ground running. The next eighteen or so months will be nothing but work.
You have to visit all your people: every district.

The power of love has prevailed.
That’s all I needed; that I may give glory to God. Thank you Jesus!
And so, every constituency must be embraced. People have to know you. Bomfwafye!

My gratitude also goes to your team that held PF together through such a rough patch.
Thank you Zambians: what a democracy you’ve got for yourselves!

God bless you all. I love you.

        • What intellect did Sata have? Everything he did was from Levy’s programme. The chap went into State House to LOOT for himself and relatives. But of course your type can’t recognize that. 3 years in govt and raised his salary 3 times.
Anyway, I left Zambia because I can’t relate with such mediocrity. Enjoy your PF.

          • Fastlane,

You left Zambia? That explains it.
You must be one of those I call ‘old Zambians’. These are Zambians from the inferiority complexity era.

Zambia has changed, people are now very confident of themselves: they love their music; they uphold their dynamic culture; they speak and write their mother tongues; they cherish their own mature democracy.

Last year, 2014, I almost crossed to S. Africa, until I came across a S. African news site where an economic analyst rated the Zambian economy to be growing faster than that of S. Africa.
That was during the leadership of our beloved late president Mr. M. C. Sata (RIP).

Your mindset has to be transformed Fastlane: gather as much as you can; come and invest it back home.
Akachila ka mbushi, kasengula apo kekele. Kabili ati, ubufumu, buchindika abene.
People out there will only appreciate you in direct proportion to the way you appreciate your mother land and its cultural values.
            Otherwise, you’ll be considered lost.

It takes intellects to uphold continuity. It’s what has made the United States of America—over 200yrs of continuity.
And I’m delighted that His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. E. C. Lungu has also promised to do just that: continuity!

God bless you Fastlane. Zambia loves you. I’m looking forward to seeing back home one day. Peace!

    • Hi Konny, do not be disturbed by some people’s remarks against Tongas. The truth is that Tongas in general are very good people. IT WAS A PF STRATEGY TO PAINT A NEGATIVE TRIBAL PICTURE ON THE OTHER TRIBES AGAINST TONGAS IN ORDER TO MAKE THINGS DIFFICULT FOR HH TO WIN THE FAVOUR OF OTHER TRIBES. THE PF KNEW THAT HH IS GREAT AND A THREAT TO THEM MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE AMONG THE CANDIDATES, THUS, THEY DECIDED TO USE THE TRIBAL CARD SO THAT NORTHERNERS AND EASTERNERS WOULD SIDELINE HH. STILL, THEIR STRATEGY DID NOT WORK BECAUSE HH STILL RECEIVED OVERWHELMING SUPPORT COUNTRYWIDE. THEY ONLY MANAGED TO INFLUENCE THE ILLITERATE WHO CANNOT ARTICULATE ISSUES BUT EVEN AMONG SUCH A CLASS, FARMERS SUPPORTED HH. FINALLY THE P FOOLS OPTED TO MANIPULATING THE VOTES, THUS BESTOWING GREAT CURSES UPON E LUNGU AND ALL THOSE WHO HELPED HIM TO RIG THE ELECTIONS. I AM JUST ANNOYED WITH THE UPND FOR FAILING TO FORCE THE ECZ TO RECOUNT THE BALLOTS BECAUSE HH WON THE ELECTIONS. CURSED BE E LUNGU.

    • Brother konny,

You’re not being fair to your Bemba brothers and sisters.

In the last presidential election, N. Province, Muchinga province, Luapula Province, and the Copper Belt Province, gave you (UPND) in almost every constituency a thousand and more votes (20-25%).
How many votes did you give them? 86, 112, (0.8%) in most cases.

How do you explain that Mr. perfect?

  11. I hope we will now have a representative government. Dictator Michael Sata’s government was the worst in Zambian history followed by the dull Rupiah’s government. Chiluba and Mwanawasa tried because the issue of tribalism by then was not so pronounced. dictator Sata did it so openly/savagely and this will continue to haunt him even in his grave. He is resposible for the divisions in the country. Lungu/ Lombe chibesakunda/ Msiska/ Libongani and many others are all outcomes of the same stupidity and yet Vodiga Lungu wants to pretend he is not related to the dead dictator sata just because he has an eastern name. Zambians want a regionally balanced government as a starting point in unifying the country. We do not want people from particular parts of the country to continue rulling alone. The useful idiot may again nominate people from the same region where he has a lot of MPs instead of doing it the other way round. Lungu is too excited for nothing and may bring on the table a very biased cabinet, especially that he has no vision and follows the vision of an uneducated fallen dictator who never went to school. It infact looks like School came out of Lungu sometime back. It is too much of reading propagandist Emmanuel Mwamba,s speeches each time he is in public

LAST TIME WE HAD A VERY UGLY PROTOCOL-LESS DICTATOR AND NOW YOU BRING IN SOMEONE WHOSE TEETH IS ALWAYS OUTSIDE HIS MOUTH. ESTHER AND STATEHOUSE MUST DO THEIR PART BEFORE ANY ASSIGNMENT FOR THIS MAN OUT OF THE COUNTRY.

  13. We are giving these chaps who are ruling our land since independence the last chance to rectify the injustices they have done on our land, our resources and our people. Failure to balance appointments and sharing of the national cake, we will join Barotse activists in advocating for cessation of NW Rhodesia/ Barotseland. You can even see that the standard that we have up to date in terms of leadership is our own Levy Mwanawasa. These chaps are just on our land to loot.
